Hello all. I am curious if anyone makes or has made a 5.1 surround recording. I want to pick up the proper microphones. I've checked out sonic studios, and was wondering if there stuff is considered top-of-the-line. If not, what would be some other places to check out?
The microphone type you use, whether it be dynamic, condenser, or ribbon etc, doesn't matter if you can't mix in 5.1. can you support surround mixing?
yes
ah good. well then, my next question would be what source are you trying to record and/or mix in 5.1?
the outside environment. I suppose it isn't truely 5.1. It is ambient surround. sounds pretty 5.1ish to me. I can use a DAT or something similar to record with.
I've found that for ambient sounds, using a stereo pair of large diafram condenser mics would work fine. if you want to do true five one recording though, I'd use five mics. but, watch for phasing issues, make sure the capsuls of the mics are not facing each other directly and have space between each mic. When I've done ambient recording though, I just go for a stereo pair. What's it for anyways? As far as mics, I'd go with a pair of Audio Technica AT4033 mics. Rode NT1s would work as well if you are on a budget. If you are really on a budget, I'd go for a pair of Marshall Electronics C2001s.
